1994 Map of Fort Barrancas

USGS Topo · Published 1998

About this map

Pensacola Naval Air Station dominates the northern shoreline of this coastal survey, where the concentrated military infrastructure of Forrest Sherman Field and Chevalier Field meets the historic fortifications guarding the entrance to Pensacola Bay. This map highlights a dense corridor of naval history, including the Barrancas National Cemetery and the defensive complex around Fort Barrancas, including the Fort Redoubt Ruins and Fort San Carlos. Across the water, the shifting sands of Perdido Key and Santa Rosa Island form a protective barrier for the Big Lagoon. These barrier islands, largely preserved within the Gulf Islands National Seashore, reveal the skeletal remains of old coastal defenses like the Fort McRee Ruins and Fort Pickens Ruins. The interior landscape transitions from the residential areas of Pleasant Grove and Quinavista into the marshes of Garcon Swamp.
