The area is characterized by a high density of civic and medical landmarks, including the Craig Colony for polio patients and the neighboring Spivak settlement. To the south, the sprawling grounds of Loretto Heights College and the Federal Correctional Institution sit atop the rising terrain overlooking Bear Creek.

Agricultural remnants are still visible through an extensive network of irrigation features like the Warrior Canal and the Bowles Lateral, which feed dozens of named reservoirs such as Kendrick Reservoir and Ward Reservoir No 1. Heavy rail infrastructure including the Denver and Intermountain and the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe provide the industrial spine for the developing communities of Lakewood and Sheridan.
