The Vowell community sits at a junction of rural roads in a landscape defined by the intersection of four Mississippi counties: Winston, Attala, Leake, and Neshoba. This topography is dominated by an intricate drainage network where Bibalucta Cr and its many tributaries, such as Myers Br and Jennings Br, carve through the terrain. The presence of numerous family and community burial grounds, including Kelly Cem, Shields Cem, and the uniquely named Rattletrap Cem, suggests a long history of local settlement and genealogical depth across the county lines. North of Alice, the Smallwood Hills provide a distinct topographic rise above the surrounding creek basins. The map captures a late-twentieth-century road network, from established routes like Zama Rd to more remote tracks like Guyton-Vowell Rd, which connect the small clusters of Zama and the surrounding timberlands.
