Fox Valley opens up in the southern portion of this landscape, where the small settlement of Fox sits along the banks of Fox Creek. This late 1990s revision by the USDA Forest Service illustrates the transition from the open valley floor to the timbered heights of the Malheur National Forest, which dominates the central and northern reaches of the quadrangle. The prominent ridge of Long Creek Mountain forms a significant topographic barrier, separating the Fox drainage from the northern creek systems like Little Basin Creek and Bullock Gulch.

Evidence of local industry and infrastructure is present in the form of the Waterbury Mill and several quarries and gravel pits scattered near the road networks. Genealogists may find interest in the local Cem located near the townsite, while hydrologists can trace the numerous named springs, such as Mud Spring and Coe Spring, that feed the complex network of mountain streams including Stussi Creek and Wiley Creek.
