Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Deschutes National Forest dominate this high-desert landscape, where volcanic topography defines the character of the terrain. The presence of Newberry Volcano is the central geologic influence, with its southern slopes rising into the Paulina Mountains. A network of off-highway vehicle tracks and trails, including the Arnold Ice Cave Trl and Swamp Wells Trl, crisscrosses a complex series of buttes such as Fuzztail Butte, Lava Top Butte, and Swamp Wells Butte.
