Flathead National Forest encompasses this wilderness landscape, where the Middle Fork Flathead River serves as a primary corridor through the high country. The remote outpost of Schafer and the adjacent Meadows Landing Strip mark one of the few points of human infrastructure in an area otherwise defined by the Great Bear Wilderness and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. This 1994 revision, based on surveys dating back to the 1950s, details the drainage patterns of Dolly Varden Creek and Schafer Creek as they feed into the larger river system.
