Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument preserves a prehistoric landscape where the West Fork Gila River and Middle Fork Gila River meet. This 2013 survey of the surrounding Gila National Forest shows the convergence of these major watercourses as they form the primary Gila River south of Gila Hot Springs. The settlement at the hot springs serves as a central hub for the area, connected by State Hwy 15 to the northern reaches of the wilderness.
