About this map

The Southern Pacific railroad hugs the Pacific shoreline in this 1942 survey, threading through a landscape defined by historic coastal land grants and deep canyons. The transition from agricultural ranch lands to burgeoning coastal settlements is visible in the presence of Dos Pueblos Ranch, Ellwood Ranch, and the Corona Del Mar Rancho. These large holdings are bisected by numerous waterways including Tecolote Canyon and Winchester Canyon, which descend from the southern edge of the Los Padres National Forest toward the sea.
