Grafton sits at the dramatic convergence of the Illinois River and the Mississippi River, a landscape defined by shifting water channels and steep bluff-side hollows. The river system is complex here, featuring numerous islands such as Mason Island, Slim Island, and Enterprise Island, separated by backwaters like Mason Chute. To the north, the terrain is deeply dissected by a series of drainages including Jerseyville Hollow and Distillery Hollow, where Scenic Hill Cem overlooks the river valley.
