About this map

Grano stands as a small rail-line settlement on the high plains of Renville County, positioned along the Minneapolis St Paul and Sault Ste Marie railroad. This 1940s landscape is dominated by the long, narrow reach of Lake Darling, which cuts a deep valley through the surrounding tablelands of Callahan and Lockwood. Much of the shoreline and immediate river valley is protected as part of the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge, a critical sanctuary established along this stretch of the Souris River. Away from the water, the map reveals a sparsely populated agricultural environment dotted with rural institutions like Lockwood Sch, Sauer Sch, and the Grano Cem. The presence of Mackobee Coulee to the west illustrates the natural drainage patterns that feed into the valley, while the systematic section grid of the Plain reflects the organized homesteading of the North Dakota prairie.
