Tangier Sound serves as the central waterway of this coastal region, where the marshlands of the Chesapeake meet the intricate channels of the Eastern Shore. The landscape is defined by a fragmented network of low-lying landforms, including Great Fox Island and the Fox Islands to the south, and Cedar Island and Otter Island further north. Navigation through these waters is marked by the Janes Island Light and the Somers Cove Lighthouse, situated near the mouth of the Little Annemessex River.
