About this map

Backbone Mountain dominates the landscape south of the Arkansas and Oklahoma state line in this early 1950s survey. The map records a region heavily defined by mid-century coal extraction, with numerous strip mines and coal deposits concentrated near Bonanza and Hackett. The industrial character is further evidenced by a coal conveyor and the extensive network of the St Louis San Francisco railroad and Midland Valley lines that facilitated the movement of resources through the valley.
