The campus of Hastings College and the specialized community of Good Samaritan Village define the western edge of the sheet, while the surrounding area remains deeply rooted in agriculture. Moving away from the city center, small outposts like Blaine, Level, and Muriel are situated along the rail lines and county roads that crisscross the flat terrain.

Water features such as Ayr Lake and Theesen Lagoon punctuate the landscape, alongside the meandering W Fork Big Blue River to the north and Big Sandy Cr to the south.
