Independence sits at the western edge of this high-altitude landscape, situated along the Boulder River near the border of Park and Sweet Grass Counties. The terrain is defined by the massive peaks of the Beartooth Mountains, including the eponymous Haystack Peak and Independence Peak. A complex network of alpine trails, such as the Independence Tri and East Fork Cutoff Tri, connects various remote drainage basins and glacial lakes.
