Portage and the agricultural settlements of Woodruff and Cherry Creek anchor the western edge of this landscape, situated within the broad Malad Valley. This 2017 survey details the complex water management systems of the region, including the Samaria Lake Canal and the meandering course of the Malad River as it flows south toward the Utah border. To the east, the terrain rises sharply into the Malad Range, where the high country is protected by the Caribou National Forest.
