Malad Valley serves as a critical agricultural and transit corridor along the Idaho-Utah border, where S Old Hwy 191 links the small settlements of Portage, Woodruff, and Cherry Creek. The western floor of the valley is defined by the winding Malad River and the engineering of the Samaria Lake Canal, which support the local farming economy. This flat basin contrasts sharply with the rising slopes of the Malad Range to the east, much of which is protected within the Caribou National Forest.
