This late nineteenth-century reconnaissance captures a largely unpopulated desert wilderness defined by the deep incisions of the Colorado River and the San Juan River. The convergence of these massive waterways occurs near the southern extent of the Water Pocket Fold, a dramatic geological uplift that dictates the local drainage patterns of Halls Creek.
