The Missouri River defines the northern boundary of this central Montana landscape, where the waters divide Phillips Co and Fergus Co. The terrain is characterized by a series of deep drainages and breaks, including King Coulee, Musselman Coulee, and Downer Coulee, which carve through the high ground of Hessler Ridge and Galhand Ridge. These coulees feed into Armells Creek and Sand Cr, moving water toward the river valley where fertile areas like McNulty Bottoms and Gardipee Bottoms sit adjacent to King Island.
