The coastal salt dome of High Island rises above the surrounding wetlands in this 1962 survey of the Texas shoreline. Positioned where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Lower Marsh, this unique geological feature supports an intensive network of oil wells and a dense arrangement of infrastructure including a Water Tank and Radio Tower. To the west, the community of Gilchrist sits near Rollover Pass, a vital cut connecting the Gulf to Rollover Bay.

Transportation through the marsh is dominated by the Intracoastal Waterway, which cuts through East Bay and bypasses the winding turns of East Bay Bayou and Mud Bayou. Remnants of historical transit are visible in the Old Railroad Grade that once spanned the marsh. The landscape is defined by its brackish water bodies, from the secluded Knoll Ponds to the sharp turns at Devils Elbow and Horseshoe Bend.
