The Nemadji River system and its numerous tributaries, including Stony Brook, Anderson Cr, and Silver Cr, dominate this section of the Minnesota-Wisconsin borderlands. The landscape transitions across the Carlton Co - Pine Co line, where a high concentration of small water bodies like Net Lake, Graham Lake, and Cranberry Lake suggests a complex wetland environment. Human settlement is concentrated along the MN-23 corridor, which connects the small communities of Holyoke and Nickerson.
