Hualapai Flat defines the center of this high-desert landscape at the intersection of Washoe and Pershing counties. These water sources are critical landmarks in a region defined by seasonal drainages such as Granite Creek and Little Cottonwood Cr.

The terrain transitions from the open flats toward Finley Butte in the northeast and the northern edge of the Black Rock Desert in the southeast. Historical travel routes are marked by C R 34 and Soldier Meadows Rd, which skirt the edges of the playa. The presence of Barker Springs and Goose Springs suggests a reliance on scattered permanent water points for ranching or travel in this remote part of northwestern Nevada.
