Ute Reservoir dominates the landscape of Quay County in the late 1960s, its sprawling waters controlled by a spillway at 3,760 feet. The reservoir was created by damming the Canadian River, which enters from the west through a deep canyon before expanding into the high plains. The contrast between the rugged draws, such as Romero Draw and Cow Springs Draw, and the engineered water system of the Hudson Lateral illustrates the transition of the Llano Estacado region toward modern irrigation and water management.
