1967 Map of Hyndman Peak

About this map

Hyndman Peak and Cobb Peak dominate this high-altitude landscape in the Pioneer Mts, where the drainage of the East Fork Wood River meets the steep slopes of the Sawtooth National Forest. The geography is defined by narrow canyons and gulches named for both local figures and early industry, such as Johnstone Creek, Sawmill Gulch, and Uncle Johns Gulch. Human activity in the late 1960s was primarily recreational and extractive, evidenced by the high-country Pioneer Cabin and several campgrounds including Federal Gulch Campground. Traces of prospecting and mining appear throughout the terrain, most notably at the Lucky G I Mine and various unlabeled prospects and mines tucked into the draws. A system of trails, including the Pack Trail and Federal Gulch Trail, provides the primary means of navigating the backcountry where roads like the Driveway rarely penetrate.
