Independence Pass serves as the high-altitude gateway between the Roaring Fork River headwaters and the eastern slope of the Sawatch Range. This 2022 survey captures the modern infrastructure of this high alpine environment, where the Twin Lakes Reservoir and Canal Company Tunnel Number 1 and the Lincoln Gulch Connection Canal illustrate complex trans-mountain water engineering.

The high country is marked by the Continental Divide and dramatic peaks like Star Mtn and Grizzly Peak. Historic routes are visible through the Old Wagon Rd and numerous remote paths such as the Sayres Gulch Trl and McNasser Gulch Trl. While the settlement of Everett anchors the eastern edge, the majority of the landscape is defined by the managed wilderness of the White River National Forest and San Isabel National Forest.
