The winding course of the Rio Grande serves as the international border between the United States and Mexico in this arid reach of West Texas. The landscape is defined by its drainage systems, with ephemeral watercourses such as Arroyo Borracho, Las Corrientes Cr, and Wilson Arroyo carving paths toward the river from the higher ground to the east. Human presence is sparse, concentrated near the river corridor where the small settlement of Indio and the locality of Ochoa are connected by FM 170, also known as the River Road.
