The high peaks of the Independence Mountains dominate this Elko County landscape, anchored by the prominent summit of Jacks Peak. Much of the eastern terrain is protected within the Humboldt National Forest, where a network of trails like the Jack Trl and China 1 Trl navigate the steep drainages of Snow Canyon and Jerritt Canyon. To the west, the topography softens into the high-desert expanse of Independence Valley, where the land is primarily organized around ranching operations.
