About this map

Cumberland Mountain and the high ridges of the Jefferson National Forest dominate this borderland where Kentucky meets Virginia. The landscape is defined by a dense network of hollows and gaps, including Shelby Gap, Canttell Gap, and Osborn Gap, which have historically dictated travel and settlement patterns across the Pike and Wise County lines. Along the narrow valley floors, the communities of Burdine, East Jenkins, and Jenkins follow the course of Elkhorn Creek, while the Pound River winds through the southern portion of the map toward the town of Pound. Numerous family burial sites, such as the Pebelton Johnson Cemetery and Swindall Cemetery, are tucked into the hillsides, offering valuable data for genealogists tracing Appalachian lineage in this coal-rich region.
