Jewel Cave National Monument and the surrounding Black Hills National Forest dominate this Custer County landscape. The area is defined by a dense network of steep drainages, including Hell Canyon to the west and the expansive Lithograph Canyon and Schenk Canyon to the north. These deep incisions into the limestone plateau reveal the complex hydrology of the region, marked by vital water sources such as Lithograph Spring, Water Draw Spring, and Mckenna Spring.
