Chichagof Island dominates this northern Alaskan coastal landscape, where the tides of Icy Strait meet a network of glacial rivers and bights. At the turn of the millennium, this portion of the Tongass National Forest remained largely defined by its natural drainage systems, including the Mud Bay River and Neka River. Remote outposts are noted by several Cabins and a Radio Repeater (FS), indicating the logistical challenges of managing this wilderness.

One particularly interesting detail for researchers is the documented Hot Spring (Loc Approx) near the center of the island, a significant geothermal feature in this subarctic environment. The coastline is deeply indented by Neka Bay, which contains distinct maritime features such as North Bight, South Bight, and Eight Fathom Bight. Management boundaries, including the LUD II Management Area near Point Adolphus / Mud Bay, show the intersection of conservation and federal land use policy at the end of the 20th century.
