The settlement of Gustavus serves as the focal point of this coastal survey, situated on a flat plain between the Salmon River and the waters of Icy Passage. In the late 1940s, the area's infrastructure was dominated by the Gustavus Airfield, complete with a Communication Bldg, Powerhouse, and various radio towers. This aviation hub was crucial for navigating the coastal wilderness, where land and sea are intricately linked through features like the Seaplane Base at Bartlett Cove.

Outside the immediate settlement, the landscape transitions into the protected reaches of the Glacier Bay National Monument and the Tongass National Forest. To the west, the Beardslee Islands, including Young Island and Lester Island, punctuate the entrance to Glacier Bay. Evidence of early resource exploration is found on the western islands, where a Coal deposit and a Mine are noted near the shoreline. The southern portion of the map covers the northern edge of Chichagof Island at Pt Adolphus, separated from the mainland by the wide Icy Strait.
