Mesa County's western slopes of the Grand Mesa National Forest reveal a sophisticated landscape of high-altitude water management. Juniata Reservoir and Reeder Reservoir dominate the hydrologic character of the area, supported by an intricate network of gravity-fed irrigation channels including the Juniata Ditch and the Kannah Creek Highline Ditch. This infrastructure reflects the region's historic reliance on mountain runoff to support the lower ranching and agricultural lands of Purdy Mesa and Reeder Mesa. Movement across this terrain follows the contours of the land, traced by Lands End Rd and various remote paths such as the Whitewater Creek Trl. The presence of smaller features like McDonald Reservoir and Cheney Reservoir further illustrates the complex efforts to capture and redirect water from Kannah Cr and its tributaries.
