Kalamazoo Summit dominates the high-altitude landscape within the Humboldt National Forest, where the rugged topography of the Schell Creek Range drops westward into the Steptoe Valley. This modern survey reveals a complex network of drainage systems feeding off the range, including the N Fork Kalamazoo Cr and numerous springs like Oil Springs and the uniquely named Ice Cream Springs. The western edge of the quadrangle is defined by the corridor of Old Highway 93, which skirts the base of the mountains near Kinsey Canyon and Ninemile Point. The map provides a precise view of the interface between protected forest lands and the open valley, tracing numerous seasonal creeks such as Fitzhugh Cr and Middle Cr as they flow from the high peaks toward the basin floor.
