Kodiak Island meets the restless waters of the Shelikof Strait in this mid-century coastal survey. This rugged western shore is defined by dramatic promontories like Cape Ikolik, Middle Cape, and Cape Grant, which shelter a series of deep inlets. A maritime economy is evident at the Cannery located just south of Spit, while several Cabin and Cabins locations are scattered near the shoreline of Halibut Bay and Bumble Bay.

Navigational hazards are numerous along this coastline, including Tombstone Rocks, Mushroom Reef, and the isolated Outer Seal Rock. The survey, conducted entirely within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, uses hydrographic data to show the shifting depths of the Pacific Ocean floor as it drops away from the rocky beaches. This document preserves the locations of early resource extraction sites and seasonal shelters before the further modernization of the Alaskan fishing industry.
