The South Platte River carves through the foothills of the Pike National Forest, defining a landscape where industrial infrastructure and recreational wilderness meet. The settlement of Kassler sits near the mouth of Platte Canyon, just downstream from the Platte Canyon Reservoir and the start of the Highline Canal. This area serves as a critical water management corridor, evidenced by the Aurora-Rampart Reservoir and a massive treatment plant located near the community of Roxborough.

Further south, the terrain rises toward Carpenter Peak and Bennett Mountain, crossed by the long-distance Colorado Trail 1776 and the Ringtail Trail 699. This rugged transition between the high plains and the Front Range includes the distinct red rock formations of Roxborough Park and the specialized grounds of the Arrowhead Golf Course.
