The Cape Fear River meanders through a landscape defined by extensive wetlands and intentional drainage systems in this part of southeastern North Carolina. The map documents a rural network of small communities including Kelly, East Arcadia, and Sandyfield, situated amidst a complex hydrologic environment. Numerous "bays" and swamps, such as Lyon Swamp, Bob Peterson Bay, and Otter Slide Bay, dominate the terrain, often separated by sandy ridges and connected by an intricate system of man-made waterways like the Lyon Swamp Canal and White Oak Canal.
