Ninilchik and the high terrain of Bird Ridge anchor this modern topographic view of the Kenai Peninsula. Much of the landscape is defined by federal conservation efforts, including a significant portion of the Kenai Wilderness (Andrew Simons Unit) and the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. These protected lands encompass a complex network of waterways, including Crooked Creek and the North Fork Deep Creek, which drain the varied elevations of the peninsula.
