The low-lying Bootheel landscape of Southeast Missouri is defined by a complex network of drainage infrastructure, such as Ditch Number 19, West Ditch, and Elk Chute Ditch. These man-made channels support the agricultural productivity of the region, visible through scattered farming hubs like Cooks Farm and Williams. The area south of the county seat is dotted with small, localized settlements such as Dillman, Octa, and Vincit, many of which grew alongside the rural road network and the banks of the Little River.
