N Fork Whitetail Cr and its neighboring branches form the primary drainage system for this sparsely settled portion of Carter County. The landscape is defined by the headwaters of several seasonal and perennial streams, including the Middle Fork Whitetail Cr and the S Fork Whitetail Cr. These waterways create a branching network of draws and valleys, typical of the high plains topography in southeastern Montana.
