Mississippi River backwaters and the winding course of the Root River dominate this borderland landscape between Minnesota and Wisconsin. Centered on La Crescent, the map documents a complex aquatic geography of islands and sloughs, including Minnesota Island and the Broken Arrow Slough. The confluence area is a network of channels like the East Channel and larger bodies of water such as Target Lake and Blue Lake.
