The Mississippi River forms a complex maze of islands and sloughs along the Minnesota and Wisconsin border, defining the geography of La Crescent and its surroundings. The river's vast floodplain is a patchwork of water and land, including Blue Lake, Target Lake, and Taylor Island. To the west, the terrain rises into the bluffs where Lanes Valley and Burns Valley are tucked between steep ridges.

Evidence of long-standing community roots is found in numerous burial grounds across the landscape, from the Saint Joseph's Catholic Cem near Pfeiffer Valley to the Hoffman Family Cem along the Root River. The southern portion of the map shows Hokah situated where Thompson Cr and Butterfield Cr meet the larger river system. Transportation and recreation hubs like the La Crosse Municipal Airport and Pettibone Beach on Barron Island contrast with the more secluded valley settlements.
