La Pine serves as the central hub of this Central Oregon landscape, where the high desert terrain meets the heavy timber of the Deschutes National Forest. The hydrology of the region is defined by the winding course of the Deschutes Wild and Scenic River and the Little Deschutes River, which meander through a series of meadows and sloughs. Distinctive volcanic features including Pringle Butte, Cruiser Butte, and Wampus Butte rise above the surrounding forest, providing clear landmarks for the area. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the Masten Cem stands near the foot of Masten Butte, offering a point of interest for genealogists and local historians tracking early settlement patterns near Dorrance Meadow and the open stretches of Long Prairie.
