Abert Rim dominates the landscape, creating a dramatic fault scarp that defines the eastern edge of the High Desert basin. This survey shows the remote arid environment of Lake County as it appeared in the early 21st century, where water management is critical to the local geography. Numerous named water sources, such as Fish Cr Waterhole Number Forty and Juniper Waterhole, point to the region's importance for livestock and wildlife. The Lakeview-Burns Hwy, also identified as Us-395, hugs the narrow margin between the sheer cliff face and the alkaline waters of Lake Abert. Further east on the plateau, ephemeral features like Mule Lake and Paddys Lake are joined by man-made improvements including Spawn Reservoir and the Lower Basin Draw Reservoir.
