The Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge dominates this section of Stevens County, encompassing a diverse landscape of protected wetlands and dense timberland. At the heart of the terrain lies a chain of water bodies known as the Little Pend Oreille Lakes, including Lake Thomas, Lake Gillette, and Lake Sherry. These lakes are fed and drained by the Little Pend Oreille River, which carves a narrow valley through the surrounding Colville National Forest and Kaniksu National Forest.
