About this map

The Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Chase Lake Wilderness dominate the southern portion of this landscape on the border of Kidder and Stutsman counties. This region is characterized by a dense concentration of prairie potholes and alkaline lakes, essential for migratory birds. Large protected zones like the Stutsman County Waterfowl Production Area underscore the area's importance as a conservation corridor. Between the major water bodies of Lake Louise and Chicago Lake, a sparse grid of section-line roads, including 49th Ave SE and 24th St SE, provides the only access through the wetland terrain. The topography remains relatively flat, punctuated by Fisher Lake and numerous unnamed ponds that shift with the seasons, reflecting the remote and preserved character of the North Dakota prairie.
