Lake San Cristobal dominates the center of this high-elevation terrain, where the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River is squeezed between dramatic geologic formations. The most prominent of these is the massive Slumgullion Slide, which descends from near Slumgullion Creek to form the natural dam that created the lake itself. Human presence is clustered at the southern end near Castle Lakes, which features a small Landing Strip and a nearby Cem.

High ridges like Red Mountain and Grassy Mountain define the western reaches, while the eastern edge follows the Continental Divide. Scattered Mines and a Gravel Pit suggest the region's extraction history, and a Radio Tower stands on a peak overlooking the north end of the lake. The map also delineates the boundary between the Gunnison National Forest and the Rio Grande National Forest, tracing the high-altitude divide.
