The Cotterel Mountains dominate the southwestern portion of this Cassia County landscape, where the high desert terrain meets a modern transportation corridor. This 2017 survey documents the intersection of Interstate 84 and Interstate 86, which converge near the small settlement of Cotterel. The presence of these major transit lines alongside older thoroughfares like Yale Rd and 1400 E Jensen Rd illustrates the area's continued role as a crossroads for southern Idaho travelers. To the east, the elevation levels out toward Horse Butte, providing a clear view of the transition from the rugged mountain slopes to the flatter plains that define much of the Snake River Plain's southern edge.
