Ferrell Oil Field and the surrounding energy-producing lands define this portion of southeast Kansas in the early twenty-first century. The landscape is characterized by a grid of rural routes such as SE Wright Rd and Rattlesnake Rd that carve through the prairie to service the local petroleum infrastructure. Aside from the industrial footprint of the Ferrell South Oil Field and Shinn Northeast Oil Field, the area is deeply etched by a network of waterways. South Branch Hickory Creek, Crooked Creek, and Rock Creek all wind across the quadrangle, eventually feeding into the larger drainage of Grouse Creek. This map captures the intersection of traditional agricultural land divisions and the specialized needs of the modern oil industry in Butler County.
