About this map

Eureka serves as the central hub of this 1880s landscape, positioned at the convergence of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The map documents a period of significant expansion across Greenwood County, where the iron rail follows river valleys to connect burgeoning cattle towns and rural outposts. To the south, the St Louis and San Francisco Railroad cuts an east-west path through Piedmont and Severy, crossing the Fall River. Numerous small settlements such as Cave Springs, Western Park, and Charleston are recorded before the consolidations of the twentieth century. The terrain is defined by a dense network of watercourses, including the Verdigris River in the northeast and Salt Creek in the southeast, which dictated the early layout of township boundaries like Paw Paw and Pleasant Grove.
