The Marias River carves a winding path across this portion of northern Montana, south of Shelby. The landscape is defined by its water management and agricultural infrastructure, evidenced by features such as the Ed McIntyre Reservoir, Wanken Reservoir, and the K 9 Ditch. These man-made improvements reflect the region's reliance on irrigation and water storage within a terrain otherwise dominated by seasonal drainage systems. Numerous coulees, including Moore Coulee, Snow Coulee, and Twin Coulee, branch out from the river valley, illustrating the complex erosional patterns of the high plains.
