The Marias River carves a deep, winding path through this portion of the Montana plains, creating a landscape defined by dramatic elevation changes and numerous drainage coulees. The river's corridor is the central geographical feature, flanked by Marias Acres and the industrial activity of Shelby Sand and Gravel. Away from the river breaks, the land transitions to a high-prairie plateau managed for water storage and ranching, evidenced by the Ed McIntyre Reservoir and Wanken Reservoir.
